Network Storage Policy

Broad Information Technology Services (BITS) provides essential network storage to all Broad College faculty and staff. The most prominent of these are file server storage space (“Jupiter”) and email service (https://mail.bus.msu.edu). These services are extremely valuable due to their availability from virtually any internet-connected computer, and the fact that information stored on them are backed up on a regular basis. Because of this, we encourage everyone to make full use of these resources for job-related information.

However, as stewards of this information we must manage unchecked, disproportional, and abusive use of these resources. Therefore, we allocate reasonable quotas, each working slightly differently. Note that these are not absolute bounds – you are welcome to request an increase in allotment, but this is subject to a robotic, categorical review of the data currently being stored.

Jupiter
User Home Directory Quota: 10GB
Notifications: An email notification is sent to the owner when 85%, 90%, 95%, and 100% of the allotted quota has been reached. Once 100% has been used, the home directory becomes read-only.

Mail
Limits: 1GB
Notifications: A daily email notification is sent to the owner if more than 85% of the allotted quota has been reached. Once 100% has been used, the owner will no longer be able to send email (but will be able to continue receiving).
